The first module of English Language Development in Children provides an overview of (child) first and second language acquisition/learning, by addressing two key questions: (i) What are the differences and parallelisms between first and second language acquisition/learning? (ii) How is a second language acquired/learned? In the analysis of these questions, an emphasis will be placed on the particular case of the acquisition/learning of English by children.The general purpose of the course is twofold: (i) to assist teachers to develop/modify their understanding of how children learn/acquire English in the light of information from SLA, and (ii) to promote critical reflection and discussion on how this understanding might inform teaching practice.
This course deals with the specifics of the process of acquisition of English as a second language (L2) in instructional settings, by addressing four key questions: (i) How are different domains of the English language acquired? (ii) What do learners’ errors tell us about their competence? (iii) How do reading and writing develop in L2 English? (iv) What is the role of input, interaction and instruction in L2 acquisition, in general, and in the acquisition of English, in particular? In the analysis of these questions, an emphasis will be placed on the particular case of young learners of English. The general purpose of the course is twofold: (i) to assist teachers to develop/modify their understanding of how children acquire English in an instructional setting in the light of information from SLA, and (ii) to promote critical reflection and discussion on how this understanding might inform teaching practice.
